HYPOMELANISTIC COASTAL CARPET PYTHON

Hypomelanistic Morelia Spilota McDowelli

This is the largest of the carpet pythons often attaining 8 to 9 foot in captivity. They are highly variable in colour and pattern, even more so than Jungles.

I find most Coastals to be rather dull coloured with the exception of some hypomelanistic specimens.

Hypomelanism is a malfunction of cells which produce melanin. Simply put, a hypomelanistic snake will have reduced amount of dark pigment. In Coastal Carpet Pythons, I believe that they gene is a co-dominant one (meaning that when you breed a Hypo to a normal, you will produce Hypos and when you breed Hypos together, you can produce super Hypos.) This is something that I will be looking to prove in the future. Keep checking here for updates!

Hypomelanistic snakes can sometimes be mistaken by their owners for brightly coloured ‘normal’ snakes, as most have ‘normal’ coloured eyes. The Hypos in my collection however, have light coloured eyes that match their background colour. Other ‘normal’ Coastals are mistaken for Hypos when they are hatchlings as they can often take anywhere from 6 to 18 months to develop the melanin in their pattern.
